It's Yours, Go Get It - NBA Stars To Athletes [Photos Included]

Athletes, coaches, parents and spectators were all filled with food for thought after presentations by seven time NBA champion, Robert Horry; 1977 NBA champion and former NBA head coach, Lionel Hollins; and two time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins.

The legends rendered motivational and inspirational words to persons of various sporting teams across the British Virgin Islands, last evening October 8, at ‘One Night Only’, an event hosted by the Department Of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with Digicel BVI.

The speakers shared sentiments by encouraging local athletes to go for their dreams, as it cannot be handed to them.

(PLTM) - “You have to work for it. Put in all the time until you get it and work some more,” said Skylar.

Speaking specifically to the female athletes, Skylar encouraged them to adopt the ‘Beauty and the Beast mentality’, where they become a beast in their sport and a beauty every where else.

“It’s alright to be a beast in your sport, be a strong and confident young lady and dominate your avenue. Be intense, but be beautiful and a strong feminine individual off the floor as well."

Similarly, Coach Hollins encouraged the athletes to have a destination and plan towards it.

He noted the importance of understanding who one is as an athlete and an individual, and added that this would then highlight their role in life.

“Work towards advancing yourself as an individual, a teammate and advance your skill. You have to make sacrifices to go after your dream. Life is hard and there are no shortcuts. Let your passion guide you to your goal.”

Horry spoke to the athletes about competition and enemies, noting that not everyone wants to see them succeed.

“People will be there to tear you down, but work hard. When you are on top, you have to work even harder to stay on top.”

He disclosed that his personal mantra in life is, ‘if it is to be, it is up to me’, and encouraged the athletes to take it as their own.

“Do your part and work hard. Be a true team member by perfecting your skill. Put your pedal to the metal and go out for what you want. Don't always look for help because it won't always be there.”
