Clifton and Clevanna Forbes, winners of the BVI Fire and Rescue Services slogan competition

(PLTM) - Clevanna and Clifton Forbes were selected as the winners of the first ever slogan competition, hosted by the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services. Their submission that copped first prize reads, ‘Celebrating Fire Safety Awareness Week 2016 While Educating the Public on Potential Fire Hazards Not Seen.” This slogan will be the official motto of Fire Safety Awareness Week, which begins on October 2nd and runs through to the 9th. The brother and sister duo won themselves a monetary prize of $125 each, and bragging rights as winners of the inaugural competition. The competition, which targeted persons between the ages of 5 and 15, was noted to be a test to see how much knowledge youths in the Territory have on the topic. Upon the launch of the competition, Acting Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William W. Penn said, “We want to see if they are aware of critical information, like how to control or prevent fires. We want to see if they are aware of these values and ethics, as well as how to mitigate fires from happening.” He added, “This slogan competition is to ensure our young people are aware that we do exist, fires do happen and fires do have significant impact on life, poverty and the environment. They becoming aware of this critical information can help to guide the generation that comes after them and so on. It’s about targeting and educating the public." Apart from this being their 20th anniversary of Fire Safety Awareness Week, Penn also noted that the Fire and Rescue Services will be celebrating 30 years as an independent Fire Department. “This is a magnificent milestone,” said the Acting Chief. He added, “If you look back 30 years ago, we had no professionals in the fire and emergency response field in the Virgin Islands. Here we are thirty years later and we have a cadre of professionals who are trained not only in the fire safety profession, but also as Emergency Medical Technicians.”
