(PLTM) - The completion of the multipurpose Greenland Stadium project on the eastern end of the island, is scheduled to be completed between late January or early February 2017, with works recommencing on the project next month.

According to the BVI Football Association (BVIFA), the installation of the artificial football pitch took a significant step forward over the past two days, with the arrival of Heribert Hammes, a FIFA approved installation expert, who has vast experience in overseeing such projects.

The private/public partnership development between the Government, the BVI Olympic Committee and football's governing body, FIFA, is projected to cost $3M.

BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton who was also on the project site, said that he was pleased to declare that the project will re commence on October 17th, 2016 and has a conclusion date between the end January/early February, 2017.

The association, is also pleased that everything went smoothly between all the parties and with the forecast finish date of the installation and flood lights are hopeful to stage the finals of the BDO Primary and BVIFA high school leagues at the new stadium, on a first class playing surface.

Bickerton, said once the pitch and lights are installed then the next stage will be the ground floor of the main stand, which includes changing areas, office space and other amenities, whilst the final stage will be the addition of seating and roof over the stand.

Hammes hit the ground running after an early morning arrival from Puerto Rico and met with Bickerton as well as Mr. Dion Stoutt, the contractor, at the site in East End / Long Look.

Although there were some technical details to sort out with the architect, generally Hammes was happy with the work done so far with levelling and compaction.

The final markings to designate the parameters of the playing surface, drainage areas, grass track and floodlight pylons were all being assessed with the architect.

Hammes also made suggestions on the depth and size of drainage pipes to allow for the most efficient removal of water, as well as the type of fill for the drainage and the way pitches are designed to slope.

The project includes a 400 meter track field, regulation-sized football field with associated facilities, netball court/volleyball court, concession stands and over 200 parking spaces. There is also the construction of an access road between the parking lot and stadium by Andy's Car Wash.

Government is leasing some 4 acres of land to facilitate construction, assist with planning permission and covering of ghuts for the installation of the track at $500,000, covering of ghut and construction of access road at $500,000 and putting in place an appropriate governance structure.

In relation to contributions for the project, the BVI Olympic Committee is expected to contribute $250,000 for the running track and the BVIFA will be funding $1M-$1.5M along with assistance in maintenance and profitability of the facility (football events, sponsorship/commercial activities).
