(PLTM) - After allegations of an apparent 'cover up', government has revealed that the count of Zika affected persons in the Territory, has increased from five to eighteen at the end of August 2016.

Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton, made this information known in the House of Assembly, last evening, September 23.

In his Ministry’s defense, the Minister was quick to note that there was no intention to hide the information, but it is not information they should be bragging about.

Also, he noted that, a total of 36 cases were suspected between the time Zika first came to the Territory and August 31st; and that there are already 14 cases suspected to be the Zika Virus, since the beginning of September.

At the end of August, the Minister released a statement assuring persons that there was no cause for undue alarm.

“The recent announcement of five laboratory confirmed cases of the Zika virus has understandably given rise to some concerns, but there is no cause for undue alarm,” said Hon. Skelton at the time.

Nonetheless, the Minister continues to urge persons to clean up and throw out anything that would serve as a breeding ground for the mosquitos.

He also noted, that the BVI is currently at level two status with regional and international organizations, which encourages persons to take all necessary precautions before visiting the Territory.

“It is a concern and we need to take the necessary precautions as well," minister Skelton noted.
