(PLTM) - Jenna Paponette, a Trinidadian expat who has lived in the British Virgin Islands for the last five years, was charged for burglary after being accused of entering the premises of her former roommate and stealing some $8,600.

Paponette, who is currently training to be a nursing assistant, made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards at the Magistrate's Court on September 9th, 2016.

Allegedly, on April 20th 2016, Paponette, mother of an eight month old baby, trespassed at her former residence in Old Plantation where her ex-roommate still resides. There, she stole the $8600 from a drawer.

The court heard that in a report given to the investigating officers, the complainant in the matter noted that she left her home earlier that day and had ensured that all the doors and windows were locked.

She stated that she returned home around 7:00 pm that evening and everything was in the same position as she had left them. However, when she went to the chest of drawers where she kept her money, she noticed that it was missing.

At this point, she indicated to officers that her former roommate, Paponette knew exactly where she usually kept her money and highlighted the possibility of Paponette still having keys for the apartment.

When Officers met with the accused and informed her about the matter, the court heard that she gave officers $8,100.

During police interview, she informed officers that she took the money because she was facing some financial difficulties. She also noted that she used the keys she had for the apartment to get in on the day in question.

The accused, who was recently released on $10,000 police bail, was granted bail of $60,000 with one surety from the court. She was also ordered to surrender her travel documents, report to the Road Town Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm and to refrain from contact with the complainant.

She will make another appearance on November 25th 2016.
